Counterfeit Tamiflu Dangerous to Patients Allergic to Penicillin
The FDA has warned that a product is being sold over the internet calling itself “Generic Tamiflu,” which does not contain Tamiflu’s active ingredient (oseltamivir), but contains cloxacillin, an antibiotic that can trigger anaphylaxis in people allergic to penicillin.   Find details, including where to report fraudulent drugs and how to distinguish legitimate online pharmacies, at http://www.fda.gov/Safety/MedWatch/SafetyInformation/SafetyAlertsforHumanMedicalProducts/ucm216183.htm.   There are earlier articles on Pandemic Influeza.

FDA Safety Review of Benicar
The FDA is evaluating data from two long-term clinical trials in which patients with type 2 diabetes taking the blood pressure medication Benicar (olmesartan) had a higher rate of death from a cardiovascular cause compared to patients taking a placebo.   The FDA has not concluded that Benicar increases the risk of death, has initiated an ongoing safety review, currently believes that the benefits of Benicar in patients with high blood pressure continue to outweigh its potential risks, and recommends following the existing label.   Details can be found at http://www.fda.gov/Drugs/DrugSafety/PostmarketDrugSafetyInformationforPatientsandProviders/ucm215222.htm and http://www.fda.gov/Safety/MedWatch/SafetyInformation/SafetyAlertsforHumanMedicalProducts/ucm215249.htm.

Heparin Dosage Warning
The FDA has published a safety announcement comparing the anticoagulant activity of Heparin Sodium made under the current standard ("New Heparin"), to that made under the standard that was in effect prior to October 2009 ("Old Heparin").   Since both Old and New Heparin will be available for several years, the announcement discusses situations where dosage of New Heparin will differ importantly from dosage of Old Heparin, and describes how to distinguish New from Old.   The announcement suggests separating Old Heparin stores from New Heparin stores, and to avoid confusion using up Old Heparin before starting on New Heparin.   See http://www.fda.gov/Drugs/DrugSafety/PostmarketDrugSafetyInformationforPatientsandProviders/ucm207506.htm for full details.   There are earlier articles on Heparin.
